Legal services are most commonly provided through traditional representation whereby Kasey assists in managing your matter while you still make all the key decisions. Kasey will undertake all steps that may be required to achieve resolution of your matter, from drafting and filing pleadings, to sending settlement proposals, to representing you at any hearings required. All correspondence with opposing counsel, and any correspondence with the opposing party that you may wish, goes through Kasey. Kasey will be your Counsel of Record within your court file, and should any appearances be required Kasey will advocate for your best interests.

Some clients prefer to firmly hold the reins to their own matter and have only partial involvement from counsel. In these circumstances, unbundled representation may be the right choice. Kasey’s involvement when providing unbundled representation is limited to assisting with discrete tasks such as identifying potential courses of action, drafting pleadings, preparing and assessing settlement proposals, and generally assisting with strategy decisions. For unbundled representation, Kasey’s name cannot appear on any documents or correspondence, nor can Kasey correspond with the other side, or attend any court appearances, mediations, or otherwise.

Kasey has experience assisting adult individuals who seek to be formally adopted by their step-parent, a process known as adult adoption. This process is typically accomplished through the filing of a Petition in court along with supporting documentation.

If you seek nothing more than a divorce order, and all other aspects of your matter have already been resolved, we can assist in obtaining a desk order divorce. Through this process we draft the Notice of Family Claim, Divorce Order, required affidavits, and other supporting documentation needed for the court to grant your order. We then file the document package with the registry. Pending approval, you will be granted a divorce order, and the process will be complete. If you have outstanding parenting, support, or property division issues, a desk order divorce will not be appropriate. The court will not grant a divorce order unless they’re satisfied that appropriate arrangements, including parenting and child support, have been made for the children. As such, these issues must be resolved before a divorce order can be sought.

When the other party has had their lawyer draft an agreement, clients benefit from retaining their own counsel to fully explain that agreement to them and highlight the risks they may face entering into that agreement. This is referred to as Independent Legal Advice (“ILA”). Kasey’s process for providing ILA includes discussion of the existing circumstances leading up to the agreement, review of the agreement, correspondence to you on her opinion of the draft agreement, and discussion of that opinion in order to resolve any outstanding questions or concerns. Should you wish to sign the agreement after receiving ILA, Kasey will execute the Certificate of Independent Legal Advice contained within your agreement.
